Project overview

Named for Dr. Robert L. Sumwalt who served as acting president from 1957 to 1959 and president from 1959 to 1962, the Sumwalt Building at Greene and Sumter Streets is a 1955 structure which was the first to veer from the University’s traditional campus architecture.

The boxy, minimalist midcentury building, once home to the engineering college, is now used for research and other academic functions.

The intent of the project is to update the 1990s era lobby renovations to create a more welcoming, inviting, contemporary space for students to gather and wait between classes.
